About AI:

AI seems to be infiltrating everything nowadays, and it is especially prevalent in the crochet community. Let me be clear: I am against AI usage. I have not and will not use AI, and you can rest easy knowing that AI was never a part of any process of my creative works. I come up with all of my own design ideas, write all of my own patterns, and take and edit all of my own photos.

Why is AI bad?

  • AI models were trained using materials made by other people and artists without their permission. Therefore, anything AI generates can’t be original, since it was made by referencing stolen material.

  • It’s taking work away from real, living artists. Every prompt you feed into AI is a job that could’ve been done by an actual artist, and frankly, anything a human artist creates would turn out much better than the slop churned out by AI.

  • AI data centers are using up tons fresh drinking water. According to the Lincoln institute of land policy, even a mid-sized data center consumes as much water as a small town, while larger ones require up to 5 million gallons of water every day—as much as a city of 50,000 people. Most of this water is used for cooling purposes. However, the water isn’t just used for cooling and then discharged as treatable wastewater; much of it evaporates in the process.

  • AI data centers are also using up enormous amounts of electricity. Meta’s Hyperion data center in Louisiana, for example, is expected to draw more than twice the power of the entire city of New Orleans once completed. Another Meta data center planned in Wyoming will use more electricity than every home in the state combined. This demand for electricity exceeds what is currently available. According to the World Resources Institute, some data centers house gas power on-site for day-to-day operations, creating continuous air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. One of the most visible examples is unfolding in Memphis, Tennessee, where more than 30 natural gas turbines intended for daily use are being installed at xAI’s new Colossus data center.

  • Noise pollution is also a large problem. The World Resources Institute says smaller diesel generators used at data centers reportedly reach 85 decibels, levels that can harm hearing. Larger industrial units can approach 100 decibels, which is equivalent to a motorcycle or jackhammer. This noise can last for hours or days at a time. Residents in Loudon County, Virginia, reported disruptions in sleep, headaches and even lower quality of life because of a nearby data center.

These are just a few of the reasons AI is harmful. You can be assured that in supporting me as an artist you are not contributing in any way to AI usage.
